EnviroDevelopment Goes Live in Victoria

On 3rd March, Victorian Minister for Planning, Justin Madden, MLC launched EnviroDevelopment in Victoria at an industry event. The launch of EnviroDevelopment in Victoria follows significant work by the local Technical Standards Taskforce and EnviroDevelopment Board of Management in cooperation with the National Board.

In Victoria, EnviroDevelopment is supported by our foundation sponsors, Boral, CityWest Water and Sustainability Victoria.

Marriott Waters, a development by Villawood Properties, at Lyndhurst in the City of Casey, became the first development to attain certification under the EnviroDevelopment Victorian standards. Set over 130 hectares, Marriott Waters, developed by Villawood Properties, will be home to more than 2500 people and 1000 dwellings set amidst 27 hectares of wetlands, parks and reserves and a network of walking and cycling paths. Marriott Waters was a participant of the EnviroDevelopment trial in Victoria, and was certified for four elements of EnviroDevelopment – ecosystems, energy, water and community. Upon completion, Marriott Waters will include a primary school, activity centre including retail outlets, an array of recreational facilities and a resident’s club featuring a gymnasium, swimming pools, café and communal areas.

Marriott Waters is the only residential community in Lyndhurst currently designed to have direct access to class-A recycled water for non-consuming purposes, providing every household within the estate an alternative water source to irrigate gardens, wash windows and cars and for toilet flushing.

EnviroDevelopment in Victoria has attracted significant interest from the development industry since the launch and information sessions are currently being conducted by UDIA (Victoria) for interested developers and consultants. Beyond Today Recognised

Beyond Today has become the fourth project to be certified under EnviroDevelopment in South Australia. This is the latest addition in the national roll out of EnviroDevelopment and joins sixteen other environmentally sustainable projects that have been accredited nationally. Beyond Today has achieved sustainability across all six areas of accreditation – ecosystems, waste, energy, materials, water and community.

Beyond Today is fully owned and operated by Environmentally Sustainable Developments (ESD), a family business based in South Australia. ESD aimed to give the $120m project, located just 200metres from the coast, and midway between Port Elliot and Victor Harbor, a distinctive appeal for buyers who are seeking a unique and leading edge environmentally sensitive lifestyle in an urban environment.

When complete, the total development will cater for more than 220 new dwellings enjoying more than 72 hectares of wetlands and landscaped open space.

Developer Becomes First to Receive EnviroDevelopment Certification on Multiple Projects

The Adelaide Development Company has become the first developer in Australia to be successful in achieving multiple certifications. Niche becomes ADC’s second EnviroDevelopment, and the fifth project to be certified in South Australia since its launch in May 2009. Niche comprises 28 large blocks, set over 2.96 hectares and is located at Hillbank, 25km from Adelaide, on the slopes of the Adelaide foothills adjacent to the Little Para River.

ADC has gone above and beyond to deliver sustainability initiatives on a small and challenging site. Niche at Hillbank integrates with the natural landscape, providing linkages between existing nature reserves and the Little Para River. The development has introduced a comprehensive plan to rehabilitate the site, to introduce native flora, predominantly local indigenous and native plants, and provide improved water retention. A linear reserve will also be established which will include an open swale to collect, slow and treat stormwater before it enters the Little Para River via the existing piped system. This will deliver environmental benefits to the surrounding landscape and habitat as the stormwater captured will help create ongoing biodiversity opportunities for both flora and fauna. Niche’s comprehensive Urban Design Guidelines encourage enhanced sustainability outcomes.

EnviroDevelopment Strengthens Its Presence in Western Australia

Two outstanding projects have joined Capricorn Village and Cygnia Cove as certified projects in Western Australia.

LWP Property Group’s Malvern Springs at Ellenbrook has been certified in the ecosystems and community elements and Peet’s new Shorehaven project located in Alkimos has received certification in water.

Malvern Springs is the sixth village to be developed at Ellenbrook. It is a development extending over 182 hectares with approximately 2,000 dwellings housing over 5,800 residents. Malvern Springs was conceived as a healthy place to live, work and play.
The design for Malvern Springs reflects the natural contours of the land and the retention of wetland and bushland areas. Seeds of local flora were harvested and are used for landscaping public open spaces and the residents’ front gardens.

Malvern Springs aims to deliver both environmental and social sustainability through the creation of a multi layered community. The diverse range of housing accommodates varying needs and ensures that people can remain in their communities through every stage of their lives. An extensive network of walk and cycle trails is also provided. For more information, please visit: www.lwppropertygroup.com.au/WA-Metro/Ellenbrook/

Shorehaven at Alkimos has been master planned by Peet Limited to offer affordable beachside living for more than 3,000 households. The community, launched by Western Australia’s Treasurer in November 2009, is the first to be developed in the new Alkimos-Eglinton area of Perth, some nine kilometres north of Mindarie. As the flagship of Peet Limited’s communities across Australia, Shorehaven will lead both residential development in the Alkimos area and standards in water conservation.

All public spaces at Shorehaven have been designed to maximise water efficiency, with a range of drought resistant plants from Perth’s coastal plain to be planted. Stormwater will be reused extensively on open spaces and expansive grassed areas will be kept to a minimum. Additionally, homebuyers will receive a “sustainability package”, including a rainwater tank, a landscaping package with drought-tolerant plant options and low-water irrigation system, as well as a compost bin to encourage sustainable living. EnviroDevelopment is supported in Western Australia by ENV Australia, Midland Brick Company and The West Australian as Foundation Partners and Lavan Legal, Water Corporation, Western Power, Taylor Burrell Barnett and Rocla as EnviroDevelopment Supporters.

EnviroDevelopment Event

The first dedicated EnviroDevelopment training event will be held on 26th May 2010 in Adelaide.

The objective of the training is twofold:

To build capacity amongst development industry professionals to provide advice to a company or developer who is interested in pursuing EnviroDevelopment certification.
To encourage companies and developers to undergo the rigour required to gain EnviroDevelopment certification, resulting in improved sustainability outcomes for urban developments across the State.

The format will be a mix of presentations and case studies and there will be no assessment at the end of the course.
